As the days shorten and the sunlight seems to desert us earlier and earlier, the dark and earthy colors emerge and take center stage in our wardrobes.  Just this week, we posted about Sunlight Affective Disorder,  about how it affects people at this time of year, and gave some tips of how we can deal with this problem.

Today, we want to add a fashion tip to our suggestions!!!  A fashion tip? Of course, we think that fashion plays a part in how we feel, in shaping our moods, and lifting us up!

While we love the earthy and dark color hues of the fall and winter, we suggest that you incorporate some bright and colorful clothing  and accessories into that dark #ootd!!  Not  every single time, but  let’s avoid the falling into a rut and make our look eye-catching and upbeat!

Fall is full of colors!! Just look at those glorious leaves which are everywhere, on your sidewalks, the pool, your flowerbeds, and stuck on the heels of your shoes!! Susie seems to collect them when she goes outside!! You get the drift!! The vibrant summer colors work  perfectly with  the rich hues.

Accessories are the perfect place to start. Necklaces, bracelets, and so on can provide that pop of energy and color to brighten our day!!! We all know how much we love to see a bright pair of shoes  or purse with a dark outfit or a black dress!    ……..or how about a fabulous hat!!!!! Be still my heart!!! Our eyes are drawn to them, and we can’t help but smile!! It’s like a ray of sunshine on a gray and gloomy day!!

Pairing a soft color like cream or white to a dark ensemble is another way to brighten the day!  Soft blouses or tops with  fabulous sleeve details are just begging to be matched with the winter hues. Setting a happier mood and lifting our spirits!!!

AB505D1C-A75C-4B2A-949C-DB4CBD4A542C

Those summer dresses in those intense colors can bring intrigue and excitement to the day when contrasted with the darker and richer colors. Capes, coats, blazers, and sweaters gain another dimension when worn over these dresses.

Don’t forget those brightly colored slacks or leggings!!! Don’t pack them all away!! Your neutral colored cardigans are perfect with those colors!!  You can always incorporate a belt in an earthy hue to tone the brightness down a tad!!! or not!!!!

71F4BA4F-224C-4423-9435-C59FFA90C55B

The  small details like our nail color are yet another place to lighten the mood!! The cheery colors like cobalt blue, sunny saffron and bright orchid, are perfect for playing up the camel, beige, black and gray outerwear we layer in fall.

When your nails look fabulous, they totally need some arm candy to accompany them. We have partnered with Jord watches this season to bring you some of the best arm candy found anywhere! The watch featured on Michelle can be found by clicking here. One of a kind wooden watches made to fit is a perfect Christmas gift! Michelle’s is from the Frankie series. The large gold face with earthy tone zebra wood is such a Go to piece!

The packaging of the Jord watch is almost as good as the watch itself! If you’d like to give a Jord watch or have a chance to win one fill out this contest form! To increase your chances to win, head over to Instagram and follow Jord watches.

Michelle’s watch wasn’t the only cute thing about her outfit- her leather midi and v-neck bell sleeve cream top were a hit!

Vince Camuto made the suede/patent leather peep toe shoe which was just the ticket to top off this look. It doesn’t get much better than a moderate wedge with some edginess to them. Michelle really loves the soft suede paired with the sassy patent leather.

Susie decided to style a look with a brightly colored vintage maxi dress from the 1970’s. We can all agree that there are some intense colors at play in the beautiful print of her dress.  Magenta, purple, and turquoise blend really well with the gold, mustard and gold hues!

9F7289C0-51B6-4802-84C7-13E41BB11EF9

She decided to pair the dress with a suede cape in a warm camel hue from Forever 21.  The cape is such a staple in her fall wardrobe and is perfect for so many different events!! It’s the perfect weight for the temperatures in the Lowcountry.

56BFB64B-9E86-4351-AA8F-F059B8CD5ED9

Her accessories include this fabulous vintage hat which she found recently at Soda City in Columbia while visiting her son and daughter in law!!  It’s rich color soooo enhances the beautiful hues in the dress!! the fabulous sunnies from Versona  Her shoes are a rust suede and match the suede belt that she added to the dress!!

Who doesn’t love a dress that has a full skirt and gives you such a fabulous twirl!!!

Dont let the gloomy and gray days get you down!!  So what if the sun doesn’t shine all the time!! We can bring the sunshine to the day through our attitudes and fashion!!

The Time Change Blues…..

It’s November, and we all know what that means!! Do you???  Yes, it’s the month for Thanksgiving, but we are talking about the dreaded time change!!!

B71432FF-F339-4068-8F72-182D366B7E2C

It;s only an hour- one hour- 60 mins…. but what a difference  that one hour makes!!!  These are dark times — literally. From now until the winter solstice on Dec. 21, the days will only get shorter.

D5619D57-BA55-432F-8A95-552B95FBF442

The time change some how manages to throw us  off our healthy schedules and leaves  us  feeling tired and blue.  Those outdoor  dinners  and barbecues with fresh fruit snacks turn into pasta and potato meals.  Our After-dinner walks or runs are replaced with time on the couch as darkness sets in. For many of us,  late fall means driving to work in the dark and coming home to the same. It’s no wonder we feel out of sorts at the changing of the time.

These winter blues have another name -SAD.  Seasonal Affective Disorder is a real  problem for many people. It occurs mainly during the winter months due to lack of sunlight.  The fact that we are spending more waking hours in the dark increases our chances of developing SAD.  You see,  sunlight brings out serotonin, which is a natural antidote to depression.

According to the American Psychological Association (APA).  symptoms of SAD include fatigue, sleep difficulty or excessive sleeping, weight gain, feelings of hopelessness or despair and thoughts of suicide.

There are some ways to  help prevent developing SAD :

Exercise regularly-  Try to get out first thing in the morning or right after work to soak up that vitamin D if you can. The kicker is you’ll need gloves, a headband and long sleeves for winter. If you just can’t seem to find the daylight, some gyms will let you join for Just a a few months to get through the slump.

Try to go outside  during  the day-  Take a step onto the porch first thing in the morning or during lunch to catch some rays if possible.

Turn the lights on- Don’t come home to a dark house. Set a timer for a few lights so that when you get home, you are not entering a dark and gloomy.

Maintain social connectivity with others – Have a bunch of friends over to do something you all enjoy together- play games, watch movies, share meals or just chat!!!

Light a fire-  Flickering firelight is one of the best things about a cold winter’s night. Whether you’re working on a crossword puzzle, chatting or serving dinner, do it in the room with the fireplace.  For outdoors, light up that fire-pit! Roast those marshmallows and make smores!!! Have some FUN!!!!

Plan a winter vacation in a warm and sunny spot- Set a date and go for a weekend get away to a warm and bright area!! spend the time recharging, relaxing and soaking up those rays!!!

Let’s be honest, there’s nothing fun about the short days and the time change, but being proactive is the best way to prevent these Time Change Blues!!! If you find that you cant seem to shake the feelings, please consult your doctor!!!

The only time we want you to feel blue is when you are choosing to wear it as an outfit of the day!!!!     Love and Kisses from Your Sisters at PenelopeSeraphina!!!

Sweet Delicious Browns

Is it terrible that when I think of brown I don’t think of a color at all? My mind goes to gingerbread cookies, brownies, Oreos and fig newtons! lol,  I swear if we weren’t so in love with fashion this would be a foodie blog!

E1D30761-0A98-4892-9D19-D5CFFAC8F787

Ok, focus- snap out of it!!! Or should we? I mean seriously think of the color of the gingerbread cookie. That caramel brown that pairs well with other darker browns. And then the fig newton that’s kinda tannish brown with that garnet fig in the middle- isn’t that such a cute combo?

If you think about dark browns, like dark chocolate brownies or even a cake- dont those dark Browns  pair well with lighter colors? We think so!

7CB0D2BE-B1A3-4799-A474-5E7C98E72131

We also think it’s Monday- which is normally a motivational post. So here ya go ladies… go find something brown in the pantry and then try to match that brown to something in your closet! isn’t that the best advice you’ve ever gotten? Lol

CE32A5BE-D06F-404F-BA03-398E285F85F7

Have a snack- something sweet and match it to a piece in your closet. This time of year, tons of sweets are in the brown family. What does your sweet tooth craving of choice pair well with?

Michelle’s chocolate brownies go very well with any time of light cream or cloud blue. Her ruffle tshirt which was casual and cotton made by Liz Claiborne paired easily with her J. Crew cloud blue cropped pants! The Nine West snakeskin pulled the two together with both a creamy white and brown. What a delicious combo!

Susie’s dark brown suede is perfect for that warm chocolate cake or maybe something with a little caramel!!  She has on a vintage two piece skirt set belted and accented by a rust infinity scarf. Her hat is vintage and a little contrast for the look! Her bag is a wicker antique basket!  Her boots are a dark brown and carry on the dark brown silhouette!

Now, if you weren’t hungry before you started reading this post, you certainly are now!      Time for a snack! We hope that your Monday was a fabulous one and that you have set the tone for a productive and positive week!!  Keep smiling and styling!!!🍁🍂🍁🍂

The Roaring Twenty’s Fashion

The 1920’s were the time of the flapper, the Charleston, and a huge shift in the world of fashion.  In our last post, we mentioned Susie’s love for the  TV show- Miss Fisher’s Murder Mysteries, and after thinking about it, we thought you might enjoy a glimpse of some of the fabulous clothing from the series and a little information about  fashion history of the 20’s!!

Fashion has indeed changed throughout history, and one of the biggest shifts came in the 1920’s.  Believe it or not, fashion is shaped by the society and all the  events taking place at the time.

Coco Chanel said it really well!!

After World War I, the world was changing rapidly in so many different ways. Cars and planes were moving people from one place to another so quickly.  Some of the changes were across the board- customs, technology, manufacturing all rocketed into the 20th century.

Image result for miss fisher's murder mysteries

Fashion was not about to be left behind! Women were on the move! They were ready to go to work, dance, socialize,  and be no longer tortured by the corsets and crinoline!!! We know………… Scandalous, right???? LOL – not at all!! Fashion adjusted to produce beautiful clothing that allowed our sisters to move and dance!!

Hemlines were on the rise.  First to the Midcalf  and then just below the knee!!!  While the hemlines were rising, the waistlines were dropping.  They started just below the bustline in 1920,  fell between the breasts and natural waist in 1921, and by 1922 were at the hips.

Floral prints were the rage, and  soft pastel colors in “Nile Green” “Sunset Orange” “French Blue” and “Maze” were the most popular colors  for women.

Evening dresses were fabulous and made with materials which were elegant and expensive.  Velvet, silk, feathers, beads were just some of the elements used in the construction of these dreamy dresses.

Now, enters the hat- the glorious cloche hat!!!!  Iconic and trend setting, this item was made of velvet, satin, horsehair, straw or felt.   The  word, cloche, which means “bell” in French,  hid a woman’s  hair and allowed her to tuck it up into the hat. The women of this time also took to cutting their hair short so that it would be the perfect length for the cloche!!!   Susie has long had a serious hat crush on the cloche, but as of yet has not acquiesced to getting her hair cut in a bob!!

Some variations of the standard cloche were the gigolo hat with it’s wider brim and crease at the top. One side dipped lower than the other, giving women a “devil may care” nonchalance!!!

Women even began to wear pants more often and there were certain styles of women’s shoes that were unique to this decade as well. Some of the breakout shoe styles included the ankle strap button shoe, the t-bar shoe, and shoes trimmed with sequins or other materials.

We think it is fair to say that designers threw caution to the wind – after all, least we forget, we girls gained the right to vote in 1920!!!!! Can we get a hallelujah and an amen!!!!!!!

Vintage or not? That is the question!

It’s not unusual for one or both of us to have on something vintage nearly every day. Especially since Susie found this awesome shop  in Nashville that has a plethora of vintage finds called Buffalo Exchange!

9188DF3C-3CBC-4DCE-B22A-CDB032FAEEC7

Michelle hasn’t visited although she hopes to, it’s still fun to find vintage pieces all over! So we have a challenge for you! Can you decide what on each of us is vintage? Name the piece!

Michelle’s vintage piece is the pants she has on. Handcrafted on the 70’s we think, Michelle found these at the goodwill. Why is it that pants fit so much better when they are old school? High waisted fits at the hip, creased down the leg- now that my desires is hard to find!!

She paired it with a short sleeved sweater from The Limited. The burnt orange color really picked up the similar color in the pants. Her half suede and half Pantent leather shoe is unique and stylish. These peek-a-boo toe shoes are low and comfortable for school with an ankle strap.

Susie is really just a vintage soul!  She has found such a joy in finding items from a time long ago and breathing new life into them. It’s amaxing what is out there and how easy it is to blend it right in with today’s styles and fashion!

DF40562C-3846-4C13-A7AE-1F806CAB0ACE

Today’s look has two vintage pieces blended in with her look! The most obvious one is her hat!! Susie does love a stylish chapeau and  always has vintage hats on her BOLO list. This little beauty came from a vendor at Soda City in Columbia!! She lucked out and found three there!!  Yippee!!!   She has been watching Miss Fisher’s Murfreesboro Mysteries on PBS and is loving the clothes from the 1920’s. Some of her latest looks have actually been inspired by the glorious Miss Fisher!

41FD0AFF-9F0C-4C64-93C1-85E7A322B2E7

Her second vintage item is her comfy wrap! With its lightweight and neutral hue, it is a perfect wrap to accent but not detract from her look while providing a little extra warmth as our temps decrease in the Lowcountry!

D4B5DCE0-86A2-41B8-907D-BC58A1E48A7C

Her tan pants are loose fitting and go with the flow perfectly. Her top is a black and taupe tunic that adds some contrast to the #ootd.

img_5893

We hope that you will feel inspired to discover the fashion opportunities provided by wearing some vintage fashion. It always feels good to know that something has found new life instead of taking up space in a landfill somewhere.  Not to mention the beauty that it brings to the table!  If you don’t feel comfortable with clothing, give some vintage jewelry a try! You will be amazed with the variety that is available!

As Saturday approaches, we both want to wish all of you a Happy Veterans Day!  We know that chances are all of us have someone in outbfamily who has served in the armed forces!  We are deeply grateful for those brave men and women!!

Digging the Denim

Blue jean baby…. L.A. Lady…..

9B54D38F-B4BB-4F45-BAF6-9962965114BB

You know the rest of the song! And we love that song almost as much as we adore Denim! Whether it’s a skirt, shirt, or jeans, Denim is always such a huge hit.

For years Michelle has interchanged the terms denim and chambray. It wasn’t until this blog post that her research showed that they are similar but different. Denim is woven differently from chambray although both are a very similar color blue.

Needless to say, we dig both but Denim is a win win every single time. Have you ever stood in the closet looking for something “different” to pair with that skirt, pick the Denim shirt! It always goes with everything!!

Jeans, especially ones with wide leg, bell bottom, or some type of “fashion flare” we adore❤️. They are comfortable and versatile yet cute and reasonable.

Michelle found her denim jumpsuit at TJ Maxx before she went to Italy this summer. She almost forgot to wear it while the temps were still warm because it’s sleeveless. Luckily she remembered it and put a simple cardigan on top to move it into the fall months pretty smoothly.

This jumpsuit is casual and buttons down the front. It has a feminine cut that ties like a corset in the back to keep it fitted. Her #sotd is local to her but have traveled the world! Barron’s department store is the place she found these Corkies. She found them before Italy so they went with her and they were so comfortable she wore them everywhere! They are still going strong and have animal print on them- can you beat animal print with denim? We think not!

ED564873-1AE2-4143-9A43-CC6A12102359

Susie’s wide leg denim pants are super comfy and lent themselves to a funky retro look! She decided to follow the impulse and see how it turned out!  She paired the denim with an off the shoulder black top and a really cool crocheted  little poncho in a great fall shade of green.

This poncho is made to be worn loose or belted! For today’s look, she belted it with this fun vintage belt from Buffalo Exchange. The chunky earthy tone stones and tan leather tie to bring the boho style to the poncho!

F96F0B2C-BE31-44F9-A098-5964D23CF73E

She added a wooden necklace to the look.  Just another boho vibe!!  The scarf and denim wedges  complete this fun #ootd.  She can’t wait to style these pants with some chunky sweaters and take them in a whole other direction! Stay tuned to see them again.

For the Love of Leggings!

It’s Fall, y’all!!!  That means a change in our fashion choices! Some dictated by just the thrill of the season change and not necessarily the temperatures.  However, as much as mother nature has really only teased us with any cool temps, we have happily brought out our leggings and  are feeling the love!!! We love them!!!!! Yes, we do!

5339E67F-31EE-4A8F-B9A0-4A374E35D500

You know that we  also love education so we thought we would give a little history behind the leggings!!  Far from being new arrivals in the fashion world, these babies have been around since the 13th century where they were worn by men as the separate hose with their pants or knickers!   Who knew!!!

A7B31C3B-7EEF-495D-88AD-13894CDE8A72

Not to be outdone, the Native Americans also had a part in the history of the leggings with  their separate leggings of buckskin leather.  French fur trappers, mountain men, and the cowboys also had their own version of leggings that they wore!!!

CE5FDCCF-126C-4B8E-9463-67B48E86273D

Finally, women started feeling the legging love in the 19th century with their pantalettes.  Isn’t that a pretty word?  They wore them under their crinolines. So many layers!!!

Image result for pantalettes from 19th century

Image result for pantalettes from 19th century

Another version of the legging emerged in the 1960’s when women began wearing them as a tight pant similar to the capri pant! Maybe you have heard of  them refereed to as the cigarette pants!

Image result for 1960's pants leggings

Obviously,  leggings have been around in some shape or form for a long time! That being said, what a controversy there is about this simple item of clothing.   What in the world can be complicated about that? Right?

70897E06-0134-4D5B-B595-9E6FE2974E96

The common debate surrounding our beloved leggings is centered around how they are worn and what they are worn with.

We thought that we would offer a few of our do’s and don’t’s with you tonight!

It’s a common thing that people confuse pants for leggings. So let’s start by clearing that up and talking about some of the DON’TS for our beloved leggings.

4F666EA2-F303-4EB7-9F29-BF2E21312E65

Don’t expose your crotch. Whatever you are pairing with you leggings should be long enough to cover your crotch area completely. I’m sure your friends love you, but they don’t love you that much! Leggings show every nook and cranny of what they touch. There is nothing left to the imagination if you can see it in leggings, so please ladies, cover your private parts!

Don’t wear see through leggings. Some leggings are made of material that you can see through. What if you pair yours with a chiffon top that is see through, and  then your leggings are see through. That’s a lose/lose situation!! We have even seen some women wear no underwear with leggings and then you can see through them. Talk about a shocking discovery! HELLO!

7AA999BE-FA76-4201-A47A-CCE0250B1B85

Don’t do tight on tight. If you are wearing leggings, put a loose top or dress on top. You don’t want a tight dress clinging to your leggings, that’s not fun for anyone!

Don’t throw a tshirt on and call it a day. Leggings need more than just a tshirt, unless you are going to the gym, and in that case, you need leggings specific to working out. Most daily leggings can not  withstand the grind of the gym, they aren’t made for it, and they will wear out quickly. Not to mention leggings made for working out have synthetic fibers which help keep the muscles warm and cool you off.

Do style yours with a tunic top or sweater! We are also styling ours with a dress that may be too short alone, but when leggings are added, it’s a just right combination.

EB1C919B-9C28-4F55-A19D-C41C95C1A13D

Do wear suede or leather leggings this winter! Everyone needs to invest in a good pair of textured leggings like leather to keep that edgy fashionable flare going while still having the comfort of a legging.

Do get yourself some fleece on the inside high quality leggings that can keep you warm in the really chilly months. We’ve all had the cotton pair that is thin but oh so comfortable, but what about when its freezing outside and you want to wear them. There are some super thick leggings with fleece on the inside that keep you warm and cozy.

Do layer layer layer!! A fantastic look with leggings is a layered look. If you pair your leggings with a longer top put a longer jacket or vest on top to create layers. Also, make sure if you have layered with a blazer, the shirt under it has length in case you want to remove the blazer.

So, off to the royal ball….. we mean everyday life with our leggings in tow. We hope this has been an enlightening information session on how to wear those cute leggings this winter! Happy Styling!

Do You Suffer From the Midweek Slump?

We all know about the Manic Mondays and the Terrible Tuesdays, but did you realize that Wednesday is the day of the Midweek Slump?  We all remember the  camel from the Geico commercial and his  Wednesday=Hump Day humor. Admit it, you went around imitating him and laughing as you did it!! Right??? We weren’t the only ones!!!….. Were we?

We decided that we wanted to share some tips to help each of you power through that mid week slump when it hits you! Yes, we know that today is Thursday, but this gives you almost a week to digest the information and look for ways to implement them as you crush that slump and conquer the end of the week just like the awesome and fabulous fashionistas and rock stars that you are!!!

  1. Start your Wednesday with Positive Affirmations!    Knowing that Wednesdays bring the feelings that they do, fight it head on with some positive power. Give yourself a dose of positive affirmation and motivation along with that cup of coffee! Tape it to your mirror. Make it your screensaver. Say it over and over in  your head during those negative and stressful moments.  Affirmations are like exercise, they increase the hormones that help us to feel good and aid in rewiring our brains to drop the negative and have positive thoughts.  We all need some Good Vibrations!!
  2. Plan something fun for your Wednesday night!        Where is it written in stone that only good times can be had on the weekends?   Catch a movie, go out to dinner, spend times with friends, have a netflix binge!! Whatever, you find enjoyable, just do it!  Make it a fun day and evening.
  3.  Just Breathe!        We want you to stop and take a deep breath.   ……. to breathe in relaxation and breathe out the tension.  Meditation and a little quiet time can go a long way to helping you conquer the rushed and negative midweek vibes!
  4.  Get some exercise!   Whether you choose first thing in the morning or during lunch, set aside some time to get active.  We are talking both mental and physical benefits here!! Winner Winner Chicken Dinner!!  Don’t wait until after work. We all know the temptation at that point to say- Tomorrow, I will just do it tomorrow.  Give your brain and your emotions a break!  During lunch, you can take a walk, windowshop, visit the park, go to the gym- whatever it takes to push the reset button!

So when the next Wednesday rolls around, think about these tips and use them to make it a great day!!

Michelle’s Ann Taylor Loft mini dress is such a cute little number. The 3/4 length sleeve lends itself to fall very well while the bold colors of purple and pink add a little pizazz of lingering summer.

The necklace from handpicked picked up on that bright pink bottom block.

Her mules are from Cato and the pink scarf she brought along in case she got a chill. It wasn’t a perfect match, but I mean what ever is???

Susie’s midweek look is a black column with a really fun tunic in black and taupe over it! She kept the black column simple, but added the wow factor with the tunic!! She loves the flowy  and graceful silhouette it lends to the look.

Her accessories pick up on and blend with the taupe stripe on the tunic and provide a contrast to the black. The necklace is a design of crystals and taupe ribbon. Her purse is a vintage find from Nashville and has a really sweet tortoise handle! Such a ladylike bag!!

Her sunglasses are from Versona and are the perfect neutrals for this look. The shoes are Nine West black pumps. Always a great addition to the style.
