Cato’s Holiday Spectacular

As soon as the turkey settles and the Black Friday shopping is done, the holiday parties and festivities commence!  Our minds immediately are concerned with getting the shopping all done and attending a never ending stream  of different holiday events- from get-togethers with friends and family to work celebrations with our colleagues – each of which requiring, of course, that we look our very best!!

What to wear??? We hear those words in conversations with our friends and, believe it or not, in our own heads!

We decided to visit a local store and showcase some affordable and fashionable holiday looks which are both holiday ready and on trend. So off to Cato, we went!!!!

Michelle’s first dressy holiday outfit is a silver and gold metallic cold shoulder shift dress. This dress offers a lot of comfort for all sizes. It’s three-quarter length sleeve is great for both indoor and outdoor holiday fun. It can be yours from Cato for $29.99. She also found this cute tied black choker to go with the dress that’s on sale for $7.99. They heels that Wrap the ankle can be worn with so many different things this season. The ones Michelle found were $24.99. You can shop her entire look for under $70. What a great way to enter a Christmas or New Year’s eve party!

There is nothing more festive and classic than a black midi wrap dress ($34.99). Susie chose one with a v neck, ¾ sleeves and a straight skirt! This dress is totally appropriate for many different types of celebrations, but the office party is one where we think it would definitely be a perfect pick!!  It is anything but a basic LBD and you are sure to get compliments on it!  When paired with silver and black teardrop and rhinestone earrings ($1.99) and a bold silver and black medallion necklace ($5.99) , this dress is bound to make an impression without being over the top. Her shoes “du nuit” are these awesome Black Suede Mary Jane heels (24.99)!  By the way, Susie said yes to the shoes!! They did, indeed, come home with her!!

Crushed velvet this season is crushing all of our hearts! Michelle found this bell sleeve teal crushed velvet dress at Cato for only $34.99. It is a show stopper with this long pendant necklace ($11.99) that pulls all of the blues out of the teal along with it’s natural green tendancy. Her earrings ($5.99) add a little rhinestone pop with the same blue/green stones, this dress can be dressed up or down very easily. Cato is loaded in the boot department this year. One of Michelle’s favorites was this over the knee suede with a lace up back that are $39.99.

If you are looking for a cute handbag for your Holiday party, or even everyday wear, Cato had some cute ones! This clutch Michelle is holding is a Jade and Deer charging wallet for $19.99. In black, you can use it for almost anything! And did you hear us say, charging? Yes, ladies it has the capability to charge your phones!

Sometimes an event calls for a little glitz, but we still want to be comfortable!!  That makes this look a perfect choice. A sweater and skirt combination with a little glam and a lot of comfort!! The skirt ($24.99) has a – dare we say it- elastic waistline!! The black with gold metallic shapes is a perfect silhouette and goes so well with the sleeveless black turtleneck ($17.99).  Talk about a great addition to your wardrobe!!! This turtleneck is certainly one! The gold chain drop earrings ($3.99) are a great accessory with the gold circle necklace ($9.99)! Leave it to Susie to pair her look with a matching cup ($7.99)!!! It’s all about the details, y’all!!

Red and black are perfect combos for the Holiday season, that’s why Michelle chose to pair these red mary jane heels ($24.99) with the ribbed metallic and black sweater dress ($34.99). This dress hugs and falls in just the right places! It’s a 3/4 sleeve which is a great transition from inside to outside in cooler weather. Her earrings match the long necklace, as they are a set that you can have for $9.99

57B2FBCA-7285-4A01-81D9-6B24F1B1307A

Pulling another skirt ($24.99) look this time with  an asymmetrical black top ($13.99)! Susie loved this striped black, gold, white and silver material!! It had a ruffle around the hemline and a fabulous texture to the material!! Susie wore it with the asymmetrical top but also loved the matching jacket ($34.99)!!!  So much versatility here!! She also chose a  gold evening clutch ($19.99)  to amp up the glam factor!! I mean if you don’t use these fancy bags during the holidays when will you ever use it?  Her jewelry is a combination of black, gold, and silver chains to accent the colors of the skirt!!!!! The necklace is $9.99 and the earrings are $5.99.

9389F878-448A-4029-81D3-F994E7DDD73A

On a more casual note, Michelle picked up these black velvet designed skinny pants($24.99) with a gorgeous red pocketed top ($17.99) that are once again colors that scream let’s celebrate the season! They both can be worn with other things so easily and both are extremely comfortable! In need of a Beret? Cato is the stop to find really fun ones! Michelle had fun in this black one that is $9.99, you can’t beat that or the price of these cute black earrings for only $3.99.

Susie’s casual look for the holidays has a little surprise to it!! She went totally out the box and chose to style a pair of  beige crushed velvet PAJAMA pants ($11.99) with a feminine sweater trimmed with rhinestones  ($27.99) to create this- oh so soft – look for an evening with friends or an evening at a show!! No necklace was needed, but she did pair it with some fun silver tiered earrings ($5.99).   A fun pair of silver gray loafers ($10.99) are like a party for your feet!!  A pale pink beret ($9.99) was the crowning accent!! This is a perfect preppy meets glam look!

There’s no doubt that shopping during the holiday season can be stressful when it comes to how you spend your money.   With all the money we spend on buying gifts and everything else, it  doesn’t leave much  in the budget for us to treat ourselves to something new. We both believe that you shouldn’t have to sacrifice on dressing up at your holiday party. We want you to feel your best at your next soirée.

On the other side

Coming out of that turkey coma is a REAL thing people, but we should all be sprouting up and getting out by now, we think! Getting out and walking around helps quicken the recovery from the Turkey hangover. Be sure to get fresh air and lots of sunshine too!

For some of us, the Turkey coma lasted a short while because Black Friday came with a vengeance! How many of you got up at the crack to shop? How many started on Thursday? We firmly believe in spending Thanksgiving day, the entire day, with our families, but we are definitely Black Friday shoppers!

As shoppers, Michelle took on a more casual look which happens to be Clemson orange. And no, she didn’t plan on that happening on game day- but what a blessing it did💜.

Her orange and navy pullover was thin but warm enough with a tight t-shirt underneath. When layering the tighter the bottom layer, the better to cut down on bulk. She wore a straight leg Ralph Lauren jean with navy flats. It was a great all day shopping outfit!<<

sie spent the day in downtown Charleston with her boys, Austin and Carson, while her hubby relaxed at home with the dogs! He was still deep in the turkey coma with a homemade cheesecake overdose on top of that!!! Poor guy!

r Black Friday outfit was a simple and comfortable black maxi dress and turtle neck. Susie topped  this with a full length cape in camel with a brocade detail at the neck!  A jaunty little black hat from Nordstrom Rack topped it all off!! Comfortable and stylish as they walked all over creation and even visited their college alma mater!

Turkey and Stuffing and Pies-Oh My!

It’s finally that time!  The time for lots of delicious food!!!!! A time to give thanks for our blessings, families, joys and all the things which bring us happiness.  ……And as we all know a time which brings stress, which no one is thankful for, but everyone has to deal with.

This Turkey Day stress can can come from many varied causes. It may be that you are hosting the event and feel the pressures of coordinating a perfect event, or it may be that you are traveling to another location and feeling the travel angst. …… or it could be the fact that the calories at the meal are off the charts and you know that your resistance is low at this time of year!  ……And lest we forget there’s always the stress of being around that one relative or maybe even a group who you just struggle to get along with!  Whatever the cause, we all fall victim to it in some shape or form!

E61C40A5-56CD-4973-8503-4CAD7AF34B23

Don’t despair, there is hope on the horizon!

We suggest that you take a really deep breath and then put into practice some of the below ideas for turning your  stress knob down, and learning how to really enjoy this holiday that is, at its roots, a day of thanks

Let’s talk about food!! Lots of the stress comes from preparing the so called perfect meal! Slaving away in the kitchen prevents you from being able to spend time with loved ones and can leave you with frayed nerves!

.

Does anyone remember Ralphie in A Christmas Story?  In all honesty, y’all, there is no shame in a take-out or dine-in Thanksgiving. Ralphie’s family did it in A Christmas Story, and their Thanksgiving was certainly one for the books!

Another option is to assign different dishes to various members of the family! Don’t assume the responsibility for every one of the details!!

In all of this,  don’t forget to breathe!! – Especially when those conversations get heavy or heated. We all have tea relative who has no filter and can’t resistboffering up their opinions and judgements along with the turkey and the giblet gravy! You know the relative who enters the room.  and you can feel your blood pressure rise!!

We have to realize that we are never going to be able to change their personality. However, we can control our reactions to their behavior. Once we realize that, we can decide not to add gasoline to an already burning fire, and walk away from responding. If need be, go in another room and take a few breaths. Changing the subject or turning your attention to a more positive person and enjoying a conversation with them can provide you with a chance to take those breaths and rolling with the tide!  Don’t let one offensive comment ruin your day!

33C3F662-412F-4446-A080-11D9AC2C20C2

Let’s keep our priorities in order! Let’s remember that Thanksgiving is not about the food, the decorations, or keeping up with the neighbors. Let’s enjoy the time together! Let’s be thankful!! Let’s value the blessings that we have….for they are many, and we are very blessed!!

Michelle’s casual turkey day ootd is one that she bought at the end of the summer and meant to wear, but kinda forgot. It’s a 3/4 jump suit that has a drawstring waist from The Gap.

Because it’s more of a summer outfit, she took a trick Susie taught her and put an off the shoulder black shirt she had under it. What was once a summer casual is now a fall fun!

Sometimes you can wear summer things into fall by just adding tights, leggings, or a shirt underneath! Layering is a great way to take something from summer to fall.

2BDF7854-7C7F-4245-81FC-239C428DF665

Susie chose to layer with her casual #ootd as well! She is tired of waiting for cold weather and decided to wear an off white cape with a black split skirt!  The cape is trimmed with black and has a zipper neck.

30307795-43F2-4F33-8A07-ABE802E9ECBF

She kept her accessories simple but decided to add a splash of color with her red booties! Of course  she added a hat! This time she went with a vintage black beret! It just felt right!

Now, If she could only paint a fabulous picture!  For now,  she will settle for  styling colorful and fun fashion to share with her friends and family!!

A5992359-E2C5-4F00-ACB5-0AEC9268485E

So take a deep breath and turn that stress into bliss!  Happy Thanksgiving  to each and everyone one of you!!! We are deeply thankful for each and everyone of you!!!🧡🧡🧡

“Watch” Out!! Bright Color Alert!!

img_6489

As the days shorten and the sunlight seems to desert us earlier and earlier, the dark and earthy colors emerge and take center stage in our wardrobes.  Just this week, we posted about Sunlight Affective Disorder,  about how it affects people at this time of year, and gave some tips of how we can deal with this problem.

0724E347-169C-48ED-8846-B974F3503F6F

Today, we want to add a fashion tip to our suggestions!!!  A fashion tip? Of course, we think that fashion plays a part in how we feel, in shaping our moods, and lifting us up!

While we love the earthy and dark color hues of the fall and winter, we suggest that you incorporate some bright and colorful clothing  and accessories into that dark #ootd!!  Not  every single time, but  let’s avoid the falling into a rut and make our look eye-catching and upbeat!

7B85DDF4-A39E-4FFC-ADC4-454FEBAE93BC

Fall is full of colors!! Just look at those glorious leaves which are everywhere, on your sidewalks, the pool, your flowerbeds, and stuck on the heels of your shoes!! Susie seems to collect them when she goes outside!! You get the drift!! The vibrant summer colors work  perfectly with  the rich hues.

Accessories are the perfect place to start. Necklaces, bracelets, and so on can provide that pop of energy and color to brighten our day!!! We all know how much we love to see a bright pair of shoes  or purse with a dark outfit or a black dress!    ……..or how about a fabulous hat!!!!! Be still my heart!!! Our eyes are drawn to them, and we can’t help but smile!! It’s like a ray of sunshine on a gray and gloomy day!!

Pairing a soft color like cream or white to a dark ensemble is another way to brighten the day!  Soft blouses or tops with  fabulous sleeve details are just begging to be matched with the winter hues. Setting a happier mood and lifting our spirits!!!

AB505D1C-A75C-4B2A-949C-DB4CBD4A542C

Those summer dresses in those intense colors can bring intrigue and excitement to the day when contrasted with the darker and richer colors. Capes, coats, blazers, and sweaters gain another dimension when worn over these dresses.

Don’t forget those brightly colored slacks or leggings!!! Don’t pack them all away!! Your neutral colored cardigans are perfect with those colors!!  You can always incorporate a belt in an earthy hue to tone the brightness down a tad!!! or not!!!!

71F4BA4F-224C-4423-9435-C59FFA90C55B

The  small details like our nail color are yet another place to lighten the mood!! The cheery colors like cobalt blue, sunny saffron and bright orchid, are perfect for playing up the camel, beige, black and gray outerwear we layer in fall.

When your nails look fabulous, they totally need some arm candy to accompany them. We have partnered with Jord watches this season to bring you some of the best arm candy found anywhere! The watch featured on Michelle can be found by clicking here. One of a kind wooden watches made to fit is a perfect Christmas gift! Michelle’s is from the Frankie series. The large gold face with earthy tone zebra wood is such a Go to piece!

The packaging of the Jord watch is almost as good as the watch itself! If you’d like to give a Jord watch or have a chance to win one fill out this contest form! To increase your chances to win, head over to Instagram and follow Jord watches.

Michelle’s watch wasn’t the only cute thing about her outfit- her leather midi and v-neck bell sleeve cream top were a hit!

Vince Camuto made the suede/patent leather peep toe shoe which was just the ticket to top off this look. It doesn’t get much better than a moderate wedge with some edginess to them. Michelle really loves the soft suede paired with the sassy patent leather.

Susie decided to style a look with a brightly colored vintage maxi dress from the 1970’s. We can all agree that there are some intense colors at play in the beautiful print of her dress.  Magenta, purple, and turquoise blend really well with the gold, mustard and gold hues!

9F7289C0-51B6-4802-84C7-13E41BB11EF9

She decided to pair the dress with a suede cape in a warm camel hue from Forever 21.  The cape is such a staple in her fall wardrobe and is perfect for so many different events!! It’s the perfect weight for the temperatures in the Lowcountry.

56BFB64B-9E86-4351-AA8F-F059B8CD5ED9

Her accessories include this fabulous vintage hat which she found recently at Soda City in Columbia while visiting her son and daughter in law!!  It’s rich color soooo enhances the beautiful hues in the dress!! the fabulous sunnies from Versona  Her shoes are a rust suede and match the suede belt that she added to the dress!!

C2FA0F21-8D2C-4B4E-9093-7AACF7E72CB5

Who doesn’t love a dress that has a full skirt and gives you such a fabulous twirl!!!

Dont let the gloomy and gray days get you down!!  So what if the sun doesn’t shine all the time!! We can bring the sunshine to the day through our attitudes and fashion!!

Can y’all believe that it’s almost Thanksgiving?????    So much to do and so little time!!!   🍁🍂🍁Happy Weekend, lovely ladies!!!  🍁🍂🍁

The Time Change Blues…..

It’s November, and we all know what that means!! Do you???  Yes, it’s the month for Thanksgiving, but we are talking about the dreaded time change!!!

B71432FF-F339-4068-8F72-182D366B7E2C

It;s only an hour- one hour- 60 mins…. but what a difference  that one hour makes!!!  These are dark times — literally. From now until the winter solstice on Dec. 21, the days will only get shorter.

D5619D57-BA55-432F-8A95-552B95FBF442

The time change some how manages to throw us  off our healthy schedules and leaves  us  feeling tired and blue.  Those outdoor  dinners  and barbecues with fresh fruit snacks turn into pasta and potato meals.  Our After-dinner walks or runs are replaced with time on the couch as darkness sets in. For many of us,  late fall means driving to work in the dark and coming home to the same. It’s no wonder we feel out of sorts at the changing of the time.

These winter blues have another name -SAD.  Seasonal Affective Disorder is a real  problem for many people. It occurs mainly during the winter months due to lack of sunlight.  The fact that we are spending more waking hours in the dark increases our chances of developing SAD.  You see,  sunlight brings out serotonin, which is a natural antidote to depression.

According to the American Psychological Association (APA).  symptoms of SAD include fatigue, sleep difficulty or excessive sleeping, weight gain, feelings of hopelessness or despair and thoughts of suicide.

ED88B578-14EF-4912-91C6-C53A3688D4ED

There are some ways to  help prevent developing SAD :

Exercise regularly-  Try to get out first thing in the morning or right after work to soak up that vitamin D if you can. The kicker is you’ll need gloves, a headband and long sleeves for winter. If you just can’t seem to find the daylight, some gyms will let you join for Just a a few months to get through the slump.

7570467E-13FB-4942-811D-B7755CCD946D

Try to go outside  during  the day-  Take a step onto the porch first thing in the morning or during lunch to catch some rays if possible.

Turn the lights on- Don’t come home to a dark house. Set a timer for a few lights so that when you get home, you are not entering a dark and gloomy.

Maintain social connectivity with others – Have a bunch of friends over to do something you all enjoy together- play games, watch movies, share meals or just chat!!!

AC49442C-4C19-476D-81DF-1C5F059B675E

Light a fire-  Flickering firelight is one of the best things about a cold winter’s night. Whether you’re working on a crossword puzzle, chatting or serving dinner, do it in the room with the fireplace.  For outdoors, light up that fire-pit! Roast those marshmallows and make smores!!! Have some FUN!!!!

Plan a winter vacation in a warm and sunny spot- Set a date and go for a weekend get away to a warm and bright area!! spend the time recharging, relaxing and soaking up those rays!!!

8AF8BF54-B6BE-46C4-B473-5013756AEBAF
Let’s be honest, there’s nothing fun about the short days and the time change, but being proactive is the best way to prevent these Time Change Blues!!! If you find that you cant seem to shake the feelings, please consult your doctor!!!

The only time we want you to feel blue is when you are choosing to wear it as an outfit of the day!!!!     Love and Kisses from Your Sisters at PenelopeSeraphina!!!

Sweet Delicious Browns

Is it terrible that when I think of brown I don’t think of a color at all? My mind goes to gingerbread cookies, brownies, Oreos and fig newtons! lol,  I swear if we weren’t so in love with fashion this would be a foodie blog!

E1D30761-0A98-4892-9D19-D5CFFAC8F787

Ok, focus- snap out of it!!! Or should we? I mean seriously think of the color of the gingerbread cookie. That caramel brown that pairs well with other darker browns. And then the fig newton that’s kinda tannish brown with that garnet fig in the middle- isn’t that such a cute combo?

If you think about dark browns, like dark chocolate brownies or even a cake- dont those dark Browns  pair well with lighter colors? We think so!

7CB0D2BE-B1A3-4799-A474-5E7C98E72131

We also think it’s Monday- which is normally a motivational post. So here ya go ladies… go find something brown in the pantry and then try to match that brown to something in your closet! isn’t that the best advice you’ve ever gotten? Lol

CE32A5BE-D06F-404F-BA03-398E285F85F7

Have a snack- something sweet and match it to a piece in your closet. This time of year, tons of sweets are in the brown family. What does your sweet tooth craving of choice pair well with?

Michelle’s chocolate brownies go very well with any time of light cream or cloud blue. Her ruffle tshirt which was casual and cotton made by Liz Claiborne paired easily with her J. Crew cloud blue cropped pants! The Nine West snakeskin pulled the two together with both a creamy white and brown. What a delicious combo!

The Roaring Twenty’s Fashion

The 1920’s were the time of the flapper, the Charleston, and a huge shift in the world of fashion.  In our last post, we mentioned Susie’s love for the  TV show- Miss Fisher’s Murder Mysteries, and after thinking about it, we thought you might enjoy a glimpse of some of the fabulous clothing from the series and a little information about  fashion history of the 20’s!!

Fashion has indeed changed throughout history, and one of the biggest shifts came in the 1920’s.  Believe it or not, fashion is shaped by the society and all the  events taking place at the time.

Coco Chanel said it really well!!

‘Fashion is not something that exists in dresses only. Fashion is in the sky, in the street, fashion has to do with ideas, the way we live, what is happening.” –Coco Chanel

After World War I, the world was changing rapidly in so many different ways. Cars and planes were moving people from one place to another so quickly.  Some of the changes were across the board- customs, technology, manufacturing all rocketed into the 20th century.

Fashion was not about to be left behind! Women were on the move! They were ready to go to work, dance, socialize,  and be no longer tortured by the corsets and crinoline!!! We know………… Scandalous, right???? LOL – not at all!! Fashion adjusted to produce beautiful clothing that allowed our sisters to move and dance!!

Hemlines were on the rise.  First to the Midcalf  and then just below the knee!!!  While the hemlines were rising, the waistlines were dropping.  They started just below the bustline in 1920,  fell between the breasts and natural waist in 1921, and by 1922 were at the hips.

Floral prints were the rage, and  soft pastel colors in “Nile Green” “Sunset Orange” “French Blue” and “Maze” were the most popular colors  for women.

Evening dresses were fabulous and made with materials which were elegant and expensive.  Velvet, silk, feathers, beads were just some of the elements used in the construction of these dreamy dresses.

Now, enters the hat- the glorious cloche hat!!!!  Iconic and trend setting, this item was made of velvet, satin, horsehair, straw or felt.   The  word, cloche, which means “bell” in French,  hid a woman’s  hair and allowed her to tuck it up into the hat. The women of this time also took to cutting their hair short so that it would be the perfect length for the cloche!!!   Susie has long had a serious hat crush on the cloche, but as of yet has not acquiesced to getting her hair cut in a bob!!

Some variations of the standard cloche were the gigolo hat with it’s wider brim and crease at the top. One side dipped lower than the other, giving women a “devil may care” nonchalance!!!

Women even began to wear pants more often and there were certain styles of women’s shoes that were unique to this decade as well. Some of the breakout shoe styles included the ankle strap button shoe, the t-bar shoe, and shoes trimmed with sequins or other materials.

We think it is fair to say that designers threw caution to the wind – after all, least we forget, we girls gained the right to vote in 1920!!!!! Can we get a hallelujah and an amen!!!!!!!

Vintage or not? That is the question!

It’s not unusual for one or both of us to have on something vintage nearly every day. Especially since Susie found this awesome shop  in Nashville that has a plethora of vintage finds called Buffalo Exchange!

Michelle hasn’t visited although she hopes to, it’s still fun to find vintage pieces all over! So we have a challenge for you! Can you decide what on each of us is vintage? Name the piece!

Michelle’s vintage piece is the pants she has on. Handcrafted on the 70’s we think, Michelle found these at the goodwill. Why is it that pants fit so much better when they are old school? High waisted fits at the hip, creased down the leg- now that my desires is hard to find!!

She paired it with a short sleeved sweater from The Limited. The burnt orange color really picked up the similar color in the pants. Her half suede and half Pantent leather shoe is unique and stylish. These peek-a-boo toe shoes are low and comfortable for school with an ankle strap.

Susie is really just a vintage soul!  She has found such a joy in finding items from a time long ago and breathing new life into them. It’s amaxing what is out there and how easy it is to blend it right in with today’s styles and fashion!

Today’s look has two vintage pieces blended in with her look! The most obvious one is her hat!! Susie does love a stylish chapeau and  always has vintage hats on her BOLO list. This little beauty came from a vendor at Soda City in Columbia!! She lucked out and found three there!!  Yippee!!!   She has been watching Miss Fisher’s Murfreesboro Mysteries on PBS and is loving the clothes from the 1920’s. Some of her latest looks have actually been inspired by the glorious Miss Fisher!

Her second vintage item is her comfy wrap! With its lightweight and neutral hue, it is a perfect wrap to accent but not detract from her look while providing a little extra warmth as our temps decrease in the Lowcountry!

Her tan pants are loose fitting and go with the flow perfectly. Her top is a black and taupe tunic that adds some contrast to the #ootd.

We hope that you will feel inspired to discover the fashion opportunities provided by wearing some vintage fashion. It always feels good to know that something has found new life instead of taking up space in a landfill somewhere.  Not to mention the beauty that it brings to the table!  If you don’t feel comfortable with clothing, give some vintage jewelry a try! You will be amazed with the variety that is available!
